The exhibition is a positioning of sculpture in contemporary art. On display in both the interior and exterior spaces of the museum are works that focus on the concrete, tangible and material in the face of art’s ongoing tendency to dissolve boundaries. In contrast to site-specific installations or the fleeting nature of digital or performative works, which largely dominate the current exhibition scene, such a thematic focus is a desideratum. The “renaissance of sculpture”, as the art market and press have been proclaiming for some time now, is being pursued here for the first time with a representative claim.

Under the motto “Back to the object!”, a generation of younger sculptors who have opened up a broad field of materials for themselves can be grasped. In addition to the classic sculpting techniques of stone, bronze and iron, these include in particular delicate materials intended exclusively for interior use, such as leather, polyester, animal skins, lacquered wood and cardboard. The exhibition shows the fascinating range of contemporary sculpture under the special aspect of its materiality. It brings together both abstract and figurative positions in an arc of tension that ranges from pure form to detailed realism. The artists selected are predominantly emerging artists who have already gained a foothold on the art market without being established. The majority of the artists live and work in Berlin.
