This Causes Consciousness to Fracture
In this unique work, Estelle Hanania captures the dense atmosphere and tense moments of Gisèle Vienne’s choreographies with her camera. Vienne is known for her ability to develop new, complex language and sign systems in her productions that challenge familiar patterns of perception. The photographs in this volume offer a deep insight into her most important works, including Crowd, Extra Life and L’Étang, and show the elaborately designed puppets that are central to many of her pieces. The publication becomes not only a documentation of these works, but also a creative space that makes the connection between image and movement tangible.
In this presentation, the medium of photography becomes an active part of the choreographic language. In addition, texts by curator Anna Gritz and philosopher Elsa Dorlin shed light on Vienne’s innovative approach and place it in the context of her exhibition at Haus am Waldsee in Berlin.
