Energy-efficient modernization of the lighting system

Energy-efficient modernization of the lighting system

Thanks to generous support from the INK (Investments in Nationally Significant Cultural Institutions in Germany) and BENE II (Berlin Program for Sustainable Development) funding programs, the lighting technology at the Georg Kolbe Museum is undergoing comprehensive modernization. Until recently, the historic part of the building had only basic lighting, while the technology in the annex dated back to the 1990s.

Since September 2024, work has been underway on a contemporary lighting concept that is both energy-efficient and flexible in its application. A key part of this is the switch to modern LED lights, which consume significantly less electricity and can be better adapted to changing lighting conditions.
Another important milestone is the installation of a solar power system by Energie Nordlicht Kontor GmbH, which went into operation on the museum’s roofs at the beginning of 2025.

For the first time, these measures also include the integration of exterior lighting for the building, which will allow not only the architecture but also the outdoor space to be showcased and illuminated in a sustainable manner.

As part of INK, new outdoor lighting, a solar power system, and most of the energy-efficient lighting for the entire building were installed. Through the BENE II program, the skylights in the new building and extension were equipped with modern LEDs that can be controlled both manually and automatically and adapt flexibly to natural daylight.

Under the project management of Marlene Gunia, the Georg Kolbe Museum is thus sending a strong signal for sustainability and responsible energy use – with the aim of presenting the artworks in the best possible light while significantly reducing the museum’s ecological footprint.
