Exhibition Opening

The Georg Kolbe Museum cordially invites the public to the vernissage of the exhibition I know that I can double myself. Gisèle Vienne and the Puppets of the Avant-Garde, from 6 pm on September 12, 2024.

Experience the work of the Austrian-French artist, choreographer and director Gisèle Vienne for the first time in Berlin. Vienne’s works, which often incorporate anthropomorphic figures and puppets, are placed in a dialog with historical works by female artists of the European avant-garde.

In addition to Vienne’s contemporary works, the exhibition shows works by artists such as Claude Cahun, Hannah Höch, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Emmy Hennings, who used puppets and marionettes as forms of artistic expression. These artists, active in cities such as Berlin, Vienna and Paris, experimented in an interdisciplinary way and used puppet theater for political and social criticism.

The exhibition is complemented by a joint project with the Haus am Waldsee and the Sophiensælen. Haus am Waldsee will open its exhibition on September 11, 2024, and the film „Jerk“ by Gisèle Vienne will be shown at Sophiensælen on September 15, 2024.
