Kolbe's Kiez

This guided audio tour takes you to five outstanding modernist buildings: along the way, experts will provide personal insights and explain how the buildings combine the areas of living, life and work in an innovative way. In 1928, the sculptor Georg Kolbe built his functional-modern artists‘ house in close collaboration with the architect Ernst Rentsch on the edge of Grunewald, in the middle of Berlin’s Westend. Today, the building complex, where Kolbe lived and worked until his death in 1947, houses the Georg Kolbe Museum. In its neighborhood, there are numerous other striking architectural structures that illustrate different lifestyles, forms of living and ways of working. Starting at the museum in Sensburger Allee, the tour continues to the Kolbe Hain, a listed landscape park and exhibition site of Kolbe’s late work. The tour continues to Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation and the officers‘ housing estate in Heerstraße – two different examples of how life and housing can be conceived. Finally, the tour heads for Marlene Poelzig’s house, which the sculptor and architect designed as a place to live and work and realised with her husband in 1930.
